Katheryn Martin, M.Ed

Kindergarten Teacher

As a child, I spent my allowances on carbon paper so that I could type on my typewriter multiple copies of worksheets for my imaginary students.  I logged thousands of hours playing school and had my mom find old teacher editions of textbooks to add to my ever-growing curriculum collection.  When my parents hung a chalkboard and roll-down world map in my room at home, I was thrilled!  My sister and I tried many times to make our own overhead projector using a magnifying glass and a flashlight, but my dream of owning my very own transparency machine was realized as an adult when I found a machine to use with my daughters during our early days of homeschooling.  My passion for teaching goes back many years!

As a student at Texas A&M University in College Station, I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in counseling, so I majored in psychology with an emphasis in Spanish.  It wasn’t long before I realized that I couldn’t escape my love for teaching, so after graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree, I enrolled as a Master of Education student, specializing in curriculum and instruction.  While attending graduate school, I taught in the tiny town of Caldwell, Texas and later accepted a position teaching in Grapevine-Colleyville ISD.  I went from teaching in Colleyville to the corporate world, working as a representative and curriculum specialist at McGraw-Hill, a textbook publisher.  I worked with teachers in public and private schools in grades PK-12 and developed an even deeper love of textbooks, phonics, curriculum, and the art of teaching.

I became a stay-at-home mom after our first daughter was born in 2009.  She and I share a birthday – January 1!  (We were the first babies born in Baylor Garland Hospital in our respective birth years.)  As a stay-at-home mom, I began teaching group fitness classes, such as cycle, step, kickboxing, and Pilates, which I still teach a few times per week.  Since 2009, my husband and I have added two more daughters to our family.  We are excited to have all three girls at Providence for the 2018-2019 school year.

I also love music.  I grew up learning to play the piano and handbells and later added the oboe and percussion instruments in the orchestra and marching band.  I have recently purchased a small harp that I use with my children at home for family worship, and I’m excited to share it with my kindergarten students this school year.

I love the Word of God and have a passion for integrating the Word into the curriculum, which is just one reason why I love Providence.  I look forward to sharing beautiful curriculum, music, and Bible truths with my students this year!

Rebecca Hunt

Curriculum Coordinator/1st, 2nd, 3rd Grade Language Arts

I grew up as the eldest of two girls and had the privilege of using my sister and her friends as my first students at the ripe old age of 8! My parents encouraged me to be a leader and raised me in the admonition of the Lord. I knew God had called me to teach my entire life and couldn’t wait to use those gifts upon graduation from college.

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Education (specializing in Early Childhood) in 1999 from Baylor University.  Immediately following graduation, I began teaching kindergarten for the Mesquite and Rockwall Independent School Districts.  In 2006, I completed a Master’s Degree in Education specializing in Reading from Texas A&M-Commerce.

I am married to a wonderful man of God, Zachary, with whom we have three beautiful girls, Audrey, Katherine, and Caroline. Our lives consist of family outings, game and movie nights, and attending Northplace Church. My hobbies include cooking, reading, and worshipping the Lord in song!

Upon starting a family, my views about education changed and, more importantly, it got me thinking about whom I want speaking into my girls’ lives. Because of my passion for education and youth, I was prompted to explore other options for schooling.   After experiencing both traditional schooling and homeschooling, I saw a strong need in the Lake Ray Hubbard area for education that encompassed both of these. The University Model School gave me an excitement in knowing that my children can be with me the majority of time and receive a top-notch education with their peers. Thus, Providence Academy was called into existence by God in 2009 with one kindergarten class comprised of five students.  A wise friend told me not to despite small beginnings!

I stand upon God’s Word for direction and wisdom in my life and cling to the scripture in Jeremiah 29:11-14.   "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity."

Julie Clay

1st/2nd/3rd Grade History/Math

I was born in Decatur, Alabama, and lived in Lilburn, Georgia, before my family moved to Texas. We lived in San Antonio for nine years, and moved to Plano my junior year where I graduated high school in 1993. After that, I attended Collin College and received my associate’s degree, and then Stephen F. Austin State University receiving my bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with a
specialization in reading in 1998. After graduating, I taught middle school for seven years in the Irving public school system. I met my husband in my sixth year of teaching. We have been married for 14 years now and have been blessed with three
beautiful children who all attend Providence Academy. We moved to Fate in 2007 where we currently reside. I heard about Providence Academy through a friend while attending the ARCHE co-op in Rockwall. This will be our fifth year at Providence, and we are so thankful and honored to be a part of it. Providence has provided our children with a safe, Christian environment with like-minded families, teachers and staff, along with a stellar curriculum providing a challenging and enriching program centered around God. Not only that, the university model provides time for developing stronger family bonds within the home. I am so excited to be teaching my second year at Providence. What a blessing to be part of a school that focuses on quality education and encompasses the Living Word of our Almighty God.

One of many Bible verses that speak to me is James 1:2 “Consider it pure joy, my
brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing
of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you
may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Joy Daniels

1st/2nd/3rd Science/Math Teacher

My husband Justin and I have been married 14 years.  The Lord has blessed us with 3 beautiful daughters, who both attend Providence Academy. I received a Bachelor of Science in Child and Family Studies from Tarleton State University in 2002 and received my EC-4th ESL teaching certification from their TMATE program in 2004.

As a child and teenager I was homeschooled with my 7 siblings and my husband was in public school. So when our oldest daughter was 3 we began to pray and seek how the Lord would have us to educate her. After two years of praying we discovered Providence, from a stranger, at a museum an hour away. After researching Providence and the University Model School, it became apparent that it was a perfect fit for our family. Now 3 years later both of our children are surrounded here by God’s Word and His people. They are getting a Biblically sound, academically exemplary education which integrates and encourages home and family. I feel that they are getting the best of both worlds.

As a teacher I love engaging children in learning and really enjoy intertwining God’s word into every day and every subject area. Even as a little girl, I always wanted to be a teacher and I loved pretending to be a teacher and playing school. I have a passion for planting a love for learning in children at an early age and building a firm foundation in the early years that will allow children to grow and become successful lifelong learners. I feel blessed to be a part of the loving Christian education environment your child will receive at Providence.

Two scriptures that are of great comfort to me in my life are Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts I think towards you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.  Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

Christina Shedd

4th/5th Grade Language Arts & Math

I love that I was born and raised in Texas!  I started my life living in Pleasant Grove and moved to Mesquite during my elementary years.  I currently live in Forney.  I married in 2004 to an amazing man who desires his family to love God above anything else.  His passion for the Lord has taught me so much and has helped me grow spiritually.  I have gone to church my entire life.  I was baptized in fourth grade, but I feel I did not truly understand my commitment to the Lord until I was a Senior in high school.  A verse that I go back to often is Psalms 27:14.  It states, "Wait on the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage: wait on the Lord."  I have found myself in situations when I have to simply wait on an outcome.  Due to growing up in a society that provides instant gratification, waiting can be hard.  However, I have learned that when I wait for God, I grow spiritually and I receive peace and joy beyond my understanding.  Because my heart was prepared during my waiting time, I can fully appreciate God's response to the situation, even if it is not originally what I wanted.

I worked as a property manager for commercial real estate from 2001-2008.  In 2008, I became a stay at home mom to my twin boys.  I began looking into schools when they were getting ready to attend kindergarten.  I knew I wanted a Christ centered school to continue to build on the foundation already set in place in them.  I felt Providence Academy was exactly what they needed.  In 2013, I was a teacher's aide for fourth grade.  I then became the 3rd grade teacher in 2014.  I am so excited to continue my journey teaching 3rd grade.

Elizabeth Beasley

4th/5th Grade History/Science/Math

I grew up on the east coast of Florida and graduated from the University of Central Florida with a double major in Political Science and Communication. I married my college sweetheart and 28 years later we have 4 children including a Providence Academy 5th Grader.

We took a leap of faith with Providence Academy in 2014 and this school has been a blessing. After working as a long-term substitute at Providence, I stepped in to teach 3rd grade and found a greater blessing than I could have imagined. I am currently teaching Physics, Biology, History and Math, learning and loving every bit of it.

Psalm 139:14 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”  I chose this verse to remind me that not just I, but every child I teach is fearfully and wonderfully made.
