What to Expect in 1st Grade
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Mark 10:14
Ancient History (Story of the World): Our study of history in 1st grade begins with Creation and ends with the fall of the Roman Empire while examining Biblical connections. Students enjoy memorizing timelines, characters, and ancient history facts. Teacher read alouds include The Odyssey and selections from the Heroes of the Faith series.
Language Arts: The first grade language arts curriculum teaches phonics, spelling, writing, and reading through the implementation of The Primary Arts of Language. In grammar, students study First Language Lessons at home and in school. Lastly, students will take part in literature discussions based on books from the history time era studied and classical books appropriate for their age group.
Science (Elemental Science): Students learn about our Creator and His creation through Biology with the study of animals, plants, and the human body. At least once a week, the teacher plans a hands-on investigation or experiment. A favorite during the 2016 school year were octopus and worm observations.
Math (Saxon): Saxon Math 2 continues teaching young minds in an incremental manner, slowly building upon previously learned concepts and increasing retention. Math 2 covers working with larger numbers, geometric shapes, Venn diagrams, graphs, basic calculations, simple fractions and multi-step problems. Students participate in math centers with games and activities that reinforce math skills being taught.
First grade students have the opportunity to participate in specials (Art, Music, PE). Every 12 weeks the students experience either art or PE twice a week for 30 minutes each session.
1st grade students receive 30 minutes of vocabulary Latin instruction twice a week. Vocabulary is learned through music, chants, flash cards, and more.
Classroom and family come together for "Grandparents Day", "Muffins with Mom" and "Donuts with Dad." Students enjoy a Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Around the World, Valentines celebration, and an Egg Hunt. At Christmas time, each class will perform a song while the end of the year is reserved for "Night of the Stars", a fine arts talent and arts celebration.
1st grade students celebrate the "Ancients Day" with their 5th grade buddies!
Students enjoy playing together outside during recess for 30 minutes each day.
