What to Expect in 2nd Grade
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Mark 10:14
Middle Ages History (Story of the World): Our study of history in 2nd grade begins with the fall of Rome and ends with the rise of the Renaissance while examining Biblical connections. Students enjoy memorizing timelines, characters, and middle age history facts. Student reading selections include Robin Hood and Anselm of Canterbury.
Language Arts: Second grade language arts builds upon the solid skills of reading and writing that were developed in first grade by using the following curricula to drive instruction, Spelling Workout B, IEW Heroes of the Bible, and First Language Lessons. Ability based guided reading groups are used to strengthen the comprehension, fluency, and decoding needs of each student. Students also explore classic and time era related literature (Middle Ages) to aid in discussion and to practice writing skills.
Science (Elemental Science): Students learn about our Creator and His creation through Earth Science and Astronomy. At least once a week, the teacher plans a hands-on investigation or experiment. A favorite during the 2016 school year was a little visit from Mrs. Frizzle while exploring constellations.
Math (Saxon): Stressing science and social studies connections, Math 3 uses simulations and games to help your students understand and practice new concepts. It covers skip-counting; identifying ordinal positions; adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers; dividing by single-digit divisors; adding positive and negative numbers; adding and subtracting fractions; plus measurements, mass, function rules, coordinate graphs, angles, and lines of symmetry. Students participate in math centers with games and activities that reinforce math skills being taught.
Second grade students have the opportunity to participate in specials (Art and PE).
2nd grade students receive 30 minutes of vocabulary Latin instruction twice a week. Vocabulary is learned through music, chants, flash cards, and more.
Classroom and family come together for "Grandparents Day", "Muffins with Mom" and "Donuts with Dad." Students enjoy a Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Around the World, Valentines celebration, and an Egg Hunt. At Christmas time, each class will perform a song while the end of the year is reserved for "Night of the Stars", a fine arts talent and arts celebration.
2nd grade students celebrate the "Middle Ages Day" with their 6th grade buddies!
Students enjoy playing together outside during recess for 30 minutes each day.
